χρῄζει γάρ: “"aye, for he wishes it"”: implying that the wish may have prompted the prophecy. It is hard to see why interpreters should have sought to efface this tragic touch by taking χρῄζει as=impers. “χρή”, or, with the schol., as=“χρησμῳδεῖ”,—both alike impossible.
