τἄξω βίου τροφεῖα, those means of supporting life which are sought outside of the home,—paraphrasing the “ἀγοράζουσι καὶ καπηλεύουσι” of Her. 2.35. Elsewhere “τροφεῖα” always = "reward for rearing" (Plat. Rep. 520B, etc.).
