ῥεούσης, when it flows away, perishes, μάτην, "vainly," without result: i.e. issues in no corresponding deeds. Tr. 698 “ῥεῖπᾶν ἄδηλον”: El. 1000 “῾ουρ φορτυνἐ ἀπορρεῖ κὰπὶ μηδὲν ἔρχεται”: Ai. 1267 “χάρις διαρρεῖ”. Cp. Lat. futilis, fluere ( Cic. Fin. 2. 32. 106 “fluit voluptas corporis et prima quaeque avolat”). For μάτην cp.

“λόγοι
... θνήσκοντες μάτην

”
