θεσπίζονθ᾽: as Oed. had predicted trouble from Thebes at a time when Theseus thought it impossible (606 ff.); Creon had fulfilled the prediction, and had even hinted at future war (1037).

ψευδόφημα: cp. O. T. 723φῆμαι μαντικαί”: ib. 43 “φήμην”=a message from a god (n.).
