Athens “"practises justice,"” i.e. respects the rights of other states; and “"determines (“κραίνουσαν"”) nothing without law,” i.e. admits no claim which the laws do not sanction. Oedipus had placed himself and his daughters under the protection of Attic law. Creon should have sought legal warrant for their removal. Instead of doing so, he has used violence.
