[158] χαίρηις, subj., because the purpose expressed by “ἑσπόμεθα” is still present, hence also the present participle “ἀρνύμενοι” follows. τιμήν, recompense. The heroic point of honour is not abstract; it requires to be realized in the shape of ransom or material recompense. The present ἀρνύμενοι implies ‘trying to win.’
