[568] περί with dat. as Od. 5.310 “περὶ Πηλεΐωνι θανόντι,” Od. 17.471 “ἀνὴρ περὶ οἷσι μαχειόμενος κτεάτεσσιν”. The use, however, is very rare, the gen. being the regular case of the object of a contest. In 17.4, 133 the dat. is used of an object protected, and is therefore probably a true dative, whereas here it must be locatival. With μάχης πόνος cf. “φυλόπιδος ἔργον”, 208.
