[339] 339-45 = Od. 5.43-49; 341-42 = Od. 1.97-98; 343-44 = Od. 24.3-4. The whole of this passage, with the employment of Hermes as messenger, is thoroughly Odyssean. The mention of the magic wand is more in place here than in “ε”, for in 445 it is actually used to lull the sentinels to sleep. This wand is evidently the origin of the later “κηρυκεῖον”. Compare the epithet “χρυσόρραπις,Od. 5.87.
