[409] καρφαλέον, like “αὖον ἀύτευν,12.160, etc. ἐπιθρέξαντος, as it grazed the surface; this aor. form occurs only here in H., though we have the derived iterative “θρέξασκον” in 18.599. It must be admitted that both the form of the word and the behaviour of the spear give ground for suspicion.
