[668] ἐπισχερώ, in order, one after the other. “σχε-” = (“ς”）“εχ-”, so that, with the exception of the unexplained suffix “-ρω, ἐπι-σχε-ρώ” exactly = “ἐφ-εξ-ῆς”, by which the scholia translate it. According to another interpretation it meant on the shore (“σχερός: ἀκτή, αἰγιαλός”, Hesych.), which happens to suit the other Homeric passages (18.68, 23.125) fairly well, but is sufficiently refuted by the analogous Pindaric “ἐν σχερῶι”, in order, N. i. 69, etc. οὐ γάρ implies the suppressed thought, ‘I can do nothing to help it.’
