[538] “αἰ γὰρ .. ὡς νῦν”: for this form of wish, where a thing is vividly depicted as certain by opposing it to an imaginary event which is obviously impossible, or vice versa, see 18.464, 22.346, Od. 9.523, Od. 17.251, Od. 21.402, and particularly 13.825. The use of ἡμέρη ἥδε, which is inappropriate here, betrays that these lines are a reminiscence of the latter passage. For αὔριον Nauck conj. “οὐρανόν”.
