[698] μή (Ar. “μηδ᾽”; but for the hiatus cf. 17.686, 18.19, 22.481) goes closely with λίσσεσθαι both in sense and construction, not with “ὄφελες”. This inversion of the order of the words is perhaps natural, because the negative form of the sentence, the ‘ought not,’ is uppermost in the speaker's mind; he begins, in fact, as though an ordinary “μή” with opt. were to follow.
