[132] τιθήνας: this title recalls the maenads of later Dionysos-worship. It appears to have had a peculiar mystic significance, from the words of Soph. O. C. 1050πότνιαι σεμνὰ τιθηνοῦνται τέλη θνατοῖσιν” . The maenads typified the nymphs who nursed Dionysos at his birth, Hymn. Hom. xxvi. The word “μαινάς” occurs once in H., in a simile — 22.460.
