[724] αἴροντας, a form not elsewhere found in H. for “ἀείροντας”, though we have “ἀρθείς” N 63 (q. v.), Od. 5.393. Various conjectures have been made, but none is plausible. In Brandreth's “ἔϝιδον νέκυν ἀείροντας” neither -“υ^ν” nor “α_”- can be defended. Brugmann defends “αἴρω” as = “ϝαίρω” from “ϝγ-jω”, while “ἀείρω” = “ἀ-ϝερ-jω” (see Gr. ii. § 712). But it is more probable that we have an Attic contraction in a late passage.
