[623] ἀμφίβασις, only here (but cf. “πρόβασιςOd. 2.75). It clearly means the defence of the fallen body by the Trojans; cf. the use of the verb in 1.37 (where see note), etc. Döderlein is wrong in taking it to mean ‘he feared to be surrounded by the Trojans.’
