[420] Ar. read “ἀλίαστον” as a “λέξις ἐμφαντικωτέρα”, but the litotes in ἀμέγαρτον is thoroughly Homeric, cf. Od. 11.400. Hentze points out that elsewhere a god either accepts the sacrifice and fulfils the prayer, or refuses both. That Zeus should accept the one and deny the other shews that he is deliberately deceiving Agamemnon.
