[513] ἠλέκτωρ, a name of the sun, cf. 19.398, Hymn. Ap. 369 “ἠλέκτωρ Ὑπερίων”. The word is evidently cognate with “ἤλεκτρον” (“-ος”) (and possibly “ἀλεκτρυών”, Hehn pp. 265, 491), but in what sense it would be rash to say. Empedokles uses it as a synonym of fire, “ἠλέκτωρ τε χθών τε καὶ οὐρανὸς ἠδὲ θάλασσα”.
