[305] On ἠνεμόεσσαν Prof. Virchow (App. to Schliemann's Ilios p. 682) makes the following comment: ‘Our wooden huts (at Hissarlik) which had been put up at the foot of the hill, well below the level of the old city, looked straight down upon the plain from a height of at least 60 feet, and the winds blew about us with such force that we often felt as if our whole settlement might be hurled down the precipice.’ ἠνεμόεσσαν, i.e. “ἀνεμόεσσαν”. So “ἠγερέθονται, ἠμαθόεις”, and one or two more (van L. Ench. § 21). But the change to “η” is irregular; see App.
