[309] The god of battle is impartial and slays him that would slay, cf. “νίκη ἐπαμείβεται ἄνδρας” 6.339. κτανέοντα may be a secondary present, like “ἐπιτραπέειν” 10.421, used in a desiderative sense. In 6.409 (where see note), 14.481 it is clearly a future, and Cobet accordngly would read “κτενέοντα” here also; out such a use of the fut. part. is very doubtful in H., see H. G. §§ 63 note *, 244.
