[388] ἤσκειν: so Ar. apparently; but there is no other case in H. of the parag. “ν” in the contracted form of the third sing. imperf. It is sometimes found, however, in MSS. in the analogous third sing. plupf., e.g. 5.661, 899. But of course the original reading was “ἤσκεεν”. The subject of φιλέεσκε is Helen, not “γραῦς”.
