[237] For the oak-tree at the Skaian gate cf. 9.354, 11.170, and note on 5.693. The two former passages do not exhibit the variant “πύργον” for φηγόν which is found here; it is therefore best to acquiesce in the text, though the ‘wall’ (“πύργος”) certainly seems a more natural adjunct to the gate than the tree.
