[66] Cf. “οὐκ αὐθαίρετοι βροτοῖς ἔρωτεςFrag. 340. The line is somewhat of a commonplace, and rather weakens the effect of the preceding; it is rejected by van L. after P. Knight, on the ground also that δῶσι is not the Homeric form (“ὅσσ᾽ αὐτοὶ δώωσι” Brandreth; but see H. G. § 81, and 1.129). ἑκών too is not used in its ordinary sense; it must be taken either participially, by wishing for them, or better, as a matter of choice. This all points to the line being one of the gnomic additions of which there are so many traces in the text.
