[246] τοῖον qualifying an adj. or adverb is found elsewhere only in Od. (“θάμα τοῖονOd. 1.209; “σιγῆι τοῖονOd. 4.776,Od. 7.30: “θάνατος .. ἀβληχρὸς μάλα τοῖοςOd. 11.135.Od. 23.282: “πέλαγος μέγα τοῖονOd. 3.321; “κερδαλέον δὴ τοῖονOd. 15.451; “σαρδάνιον μάλα τοῖονOd. 20.302). In all these cases the general intention seems to be to leave the qualification to the hearer, as in our colloquial ‘as much as you like,’ or ‘ever so’ — either because the speaker does not care, or because he wants to hint that he cannot find a word strong enough. Here the sense is ‘as seemly as you will — but not extravagant.’ The same seems to be the case with “σιγῆι”, but the other passages clearly imply that the adjective is to be vaguely intensified.
