[582] Standing on the threshold of the chamber where his son had locked himself in, and shaking the doors in his endeavour to force an entrance. γουνούμενος is here of course only metaphorical, beseeching, the literal act of clasping the knees being excluded by the circumstances, as in 11.130, Od. 6.149.
