[105] φέρτατον, a sort of meiosis for ‘least ill’; “ὡς ἐν κακοῖς τοῦτ᾽ ἂν εἴη φέρτατον”, Schol. Cf. “α. κύδιστ᾽ ἀχέων”, Aisch. Supp. 14.The variant “φέρτερον” is apparently an emendation to express ‘better than our present disasters.’ Perhaps the poet means to suggest an etymology from “φέρω”, as if ‘most bearable’ of evils.
