[344] ὅππως: here an adv. of manner, ‘how his men can fight,’ clearly shewing the transition to the final use. μαχέοιντο is quadruply wrong: (1) the hiatus is intolerable; (2) “-οιντο” for “-οιατο” is not Homeric; (3) “μαχε-” is not the pres. stem (see on 272); (4) the opt. is the wrong mood (M. and T. § 322). Barnes's conj. “μαχεοίατ᾽” removes only the first two difficulties. Porson conj. “μαχέωνται”, Thiersch “μαχέονται” (fut. indic., 2.366); the latter is best, cf. H. G. § 326 (3).
