[695] ἀφαξίη, only here and in Od. 4.704 where the couplet recurs. Most MSS. read “ἀμφασίη”, but there is sufficient authority for the text, both here and in Od. 4.704. This is the only linguistically justifiable form, as there is no other instance of negative “ἀν-” before a consonant. The first syllable is lengthened by metrical necessity as in “ἀθάνατος”, and the insertion of the “μ” is evidently an emendation, perhaps on the supposed analogy of “ἄμβροτος” beside “ἄβροτος” (where the “μ” is of course part of the root'.
