[507] μάχηι may go either with the preceding or the following words. The rhythm and the analogy of 1.521 are in favour of the second alternative, while 16.567 speaks for the first, and the omission of the object around which the darkness is cast produces a rather bare effect. Perhaps “μάχηι” may be regarded as performing a double function, going both with “ἐκάλυψε” and “ἀρήγων”.
