[426] δουπῆσαι, to fall in battle; cf. the common phrase “δούπησεν δὲ πεσών”. For this pregnant sense the nearest analogy is 23.679 “δεδουπότος Οἰδιπόδαο ἐς τάφον”, a very suspicious ally. The short form of the dat. Ἀχαιοῖς at the end of the line is also rare, but is not in itself to be regarded as a proof of spuriousness; we might quite well read “Ἀχαιῶν” with Bar.
