[66] εἰ δ́η, since now, not expressing any doubt. κυάνεον νέφος, cf. 4.282 “φάλαγγες κυάνεαι,” 4.274, 23.133 “νέφος εἵπετο πεζῶν”, and see 17.243. “ ἀμφιβέβηκε ” with dat. is elsewhere used only in the sense of protection, but always with tmesis; the acc. is used when surrounding is implied, cf. Od. 12.74 “νεφέλη δέ μιν ἀμφιβέβηκε κυανέη”. The dative may be explained by the idea of hostile attack which is emphasized by the “ἐπι”- of “ἐπικρατέως”, as in the common “ἐπ᾽ ἀλλήλοισιν ἰόντες”.
