[168] The vulg. “ἐπὴν κεκάμω” is condemned by the non-Homeric contraction from “ἐπεὶ ἄν. ἐπεί κε κάμω” can equally be read “ἐπεὶ κεκάμω”, though it is curious that there should be no trace of the redupl. form except in passages equally ambiguous (7.5, 17.658). The choice is not easy; see H. G. § 296. The rhythm perhaps favours “κεκάμω”, but cf. 2.475, 21.483, 575 (?), 23.76, 24.423, Od. 8.554, Od. 15.277, Od. 17.111, Od. 18.150 (van L. Ench. p. 20).
