[226] Observe the distinction between “πόλεμος”, open battle in which the whole host (“λαός”) is engaged, and “λόχος”, the heroic ‘forlorn hope,’ reserved for the élite (“ἀριστῆες”). As a test of courage the “λόχος” is vividly described in 13.275-86.
