[616] It is not strange to find an Acheloos, otherwise unknown, in Lydia. Acc. to the scholia a stream there was called “Ἀχέλης”, and there were others called “Ἀχελῶιος” in Troas, Achaia, Thessaly and Arkadia; see Paus. viii. 38. 7, Strabo, p. 450. The name implies an intimate acquaintance with the country at which we need not be surprised in this book. In our ignorance of the local terminology, the variants “Ἀχελήϊον” and “Ἀχελήσιον” have as good claims to consideration as the text.
