[303] In this sentence προτροπάδην is the emphatic word; although the Trojans are repulsed (“φόβηθεν”, 294) they are not yet in headlong flight (cf. “οὔτέ ποτε προτρέποντο” 5.700) and the Greeks dare not relax their efforts — just as the clouds are not cleared away by the rift in their midst. So ἀνάγκηι almost = “σπουδῆι”, perforce, not from any anxiety to escape; 15.655.
