[597] στεῦτο, boasted, see on 18.191. This is the only case in H. of “εἰ ἄν” with opt., but there are 26 (or 28) of “εἴ κε” (M. and T. § 460, H. G. § 313). It is difficult to see that any particular shade is given by the particle. In accordance with Homeric usage it is more likely that the original sentence is to be conceived as “νικήσω, εἴπερ ἂν ἀείδοιεν” than to regard the opt. as representing a subj. of direct speech.
