[92] Cf. Od. 2.318 “εἶμι μέν, οὐδ᾽ ἁλίη ὁδὸς ἔσσεται. μέν” is here used like Attic “μέντοι” and sometimes “μήν”, = however; it refers adversatively to what precedes, not as usual to what follows. This use is really a case of parataxis; the opposition is not expressed, but the latent sense of it, so to speak, which is suggested by the circumstances, is brought out by the asseverative particle, emphasising an assertion which, by the preceding words, might seem to be negatived.
