[340] For the place of the adj. ταμεσίχροας in the rel. clause compare 406, and note on 14.172 “τό ῥά οἱ τεθυωμένον ἦεν. ἄμερδεν,” blinded, as Od. 8.64 “ὀφθαλμῶν μὲν ἄμερσε”. The word is perhaps distinct from “ἀμέρσαι” 16.53, though the sense take away will suit this passage. Cf. however Od. 19.18 “ἔντεα . . τὰ καπνὸς ἀμέρδει”, dulls.
