[253] κατηφόνες Ar. and vulg., though in Od. 24.432 all MSS. read “κατηφέες”, with Krates here. This best suits the subst. “κατηφείη” and the verb “κατηφῆσαι”, but as the der. of the word is unknown (see on 16.498) we cannot say that the text, which is so strongly supported, is impossible. Ar. regarded the word as a feminine, an intentional sarcasm like “Ἀχαιίδες οὐκέτ᾽ Ἀχαιοί”. It would rather seem to be an abstract, my disgraces, like “ἐλέγχεα”. Did. “οἱονεὶ κατήφειαι” would seem to point to this, though quoted as from Ar.
