[303] εἰρύατο, some MSS. have “εἰρύαται”, which is preferred by Heyne and defended by Cobet (M. C. 371). But, to say nothing of the weight of testimony and the analogy of the preceding “ἦεν”, the present perf. here would give a wrong sense. It is of course common in H. (1.553 etc.) with “πάρος”, but only when the emphasis is laid on a habit having been continued to the present time; here the emphasis is on the fact of the change. In this sense the use with the im<*>erf. is regular (13.102 and often). F<*> the same reason πάρος γε is right a “<*> πάρος περ” wrong (note on 17.587).
