[188] πρὸ φόωσδε (cf. 2.309) is the reading of Zen., while Aph.and Ar. read “φώωσδε”, reserving “πρὸ φόωσδε” for 19.118, where they held that “πρό” implied ‘prematurely,’ a sense which does not suit here. But there is no reason why it should mean more than ‘forth,’ and “φώως” is an indefensible form.
