[617] θεῶν ἐκ may be taken attributively with “κήδεα”, woes from the gods, as 5.64θεῶν ἐκ θέσφατα” . But it is quite possible to join it with “πέσσει”, sc. by the act of the gods. Cf. “ἐκ Διὸς ἠείδης22. 280, “θεῶν ἐξ ἀείδηιOd. 17.518 , and often. The latter gives more weight to the fact that the turning to stone was a reward, and is therefore more suitable to the consolation of Priam.
