[98] φρονέω may be taken in two ways: (1) ‘My mind is that Argives and Tr. be at once separated,’ i.e. I desire to see them separated; (2) ‘I deem that they are already separated,’ i.e. I accept the challenge, and think that an end has thereby been put to the war. Of these the former best suits the simplicity of Homeric expression and the ἐπεί of the next line; for the use of “φρονέειν”, virtually = to hope, cf. 17.286 “φρόνεον δὲ μάλιστα” | “ἄστυ πότι σφέτερον ἐρύειν καὶ κῦδος ἀρέσθαι”.
