[382] ἀμφ́ηριστον is best taken as neut., ‘made it a dead heat’; the object being a vague notion, ‘the state of things’ (H. G. § 161). It is possible but less natural to make it masc. (sc. made him, Eumelos, disputed in his victory). Cf. Virg. Aen. v. 325transeat elapsus prior ambiguumve relinquat.
