[209] ἰείη, a form of the opt. not elsewhere found in H. (“ἴοι14.21), but sufficiently attested by an inscr. from Delphi (Collitz 2501. 18) “αἰ δὲ μὴ περιιεῖεν κτλ”. It is probably analogical, after forms like “τιθείη” (: “ἰείη”:: “τιθέναι”: “ἰέναι”), H. G. § 83. There was a variant “ἱείη”, apparently based on the supposed intrans. use of “ἵημι”. But this is found only in the case of rivers, etc., where we must supply “ὕδωρ”, e.g. Od. 7.130, Od. 11.239.
