[356] The periphrastic use of ἴς, though common in Od., does not recur in Il., where “βίη” is used instead. The only other place where the “ϝ” of “ϝίς” is neglected is 17.739. Heyne reads “καίετο ϝίς”. PindarionPtol. 's “καί ἑ τόδ᾽ ἴς κτλ”. is an amusingly ingenious word-puzzle, but can hardly have been taken seriously even by its author.
