[556] Cf. Od. 3.231ῥεῖα θεός γ᾽ ἐθέλων καὶ τηλόθεν ἄνδρα σαώσαι”, and for the opt. without “κεν”, H. G. § 299 f. ἐπεὶ πολὺ φέρτεροί εἰσιν recurs in Od. 22.289; in both places we must understand the comp. to mean ‘mightier than men.’ ἠέ περ οἵδε, sc. “εἰσίν”, an unusual construction instead of “τούσδε”. Compare, however, Xen. Cyr. v. 2. 28ἑνὸς δ᾽ ἀνδρὸς πολὺ δυνατωτέρου ἐγὼ υἱόν”. For the commoner assimilation of case see 1.260ἀρείοσιν ἠέ περ ὑμῖν”.
