[164] σχέτλιος, hard, tough, here in the physical sense, full of endurance, and so Od. 12.279σχέτλιός εἰς, Ὀδυσεῦ, πέρι τοι μένος οὐδέ τι γυῖα κάμνεις”. Hence the derived sense ‘hard of heart,’ full of resistance to entreaty.
