[113] 113-4. We have no incident in the Iliad to which these lines can refer; indeed they contradict 9.352. They can only be explained as a rhetorical exaggeration used at the moment for a special purpose. πολλὸν ἀμείνων: “βέλτιον δ᾽ ἄν, φασιν, εἴρητο Ὁμήρωι περ μέγα φέρτατός ἐστιν”” Schol. A (Did.?) on the ground that the text is rather rude to Menelaos. We do not know who was the author of this criticism.
