[492] The force of the preposition in ἄνεισι is not clear. Perhaps it may be used as in “ἀν᾽ ὅμιλον, ἀνὰ δώματα”, going through, ‘going the rounds,’ as we might say; cf. “φάτις ἀνθρώπους ἀναβαίνει” Od. 6.29. Or it is possible that it may imply entering a house from the road; though for this there seems to be no analogy. In 499 it means simply returns. For ἑς used with a person cf. 7.312 “εἰς Ἀγαμέμνονα δῖον ἄγον”, and 23.36.
