[444] Ares seems to be regarded as a ‘spirit of battle’ presiding over every detail, and deciding the fate of the weapons — an idea which is found also in the common use of the word “Ἄρης” to signify the course of battle. Compare also 569. Some have taken it to mean here the weapon itself; but this is less probable. Ares in person is on Olympos, and ignorant of what is going on (521).
